Render Series seeks to provide a glance at the circumstance of moving images, what images are capable of and what we are capable of inflicting upon them. Various practitioners are invited to acknowledge a personal value system through their approach to images between reality or vice versa. And the audience is invited to spectate with ulterior motives.
Maggie Lee is a Taiwanese American artist based in New York. Since she was a teen she has made zines, shot photos for magazines, and made movies, her diaristic documentation referencing and responding to ideologies of alternative culture.
New Yorked-based artist Meriem Bennani grew up in Morocco, earned an MFA from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and a BFA from Cooper Union in New York. Meriem is currently working on a reality tv show and photographs documenting the life of Fardaous Funjab, the avant-garde Moroccan Hijab designer. The project explores the encounter of fashion and religion with a focus on the aesthetics of sexuality/sexiness in a contemporary Muslim context. Bennani is interested in reappropriating tropes and questioning systems of representation through a strategy of magical realism and humor as an unreliable pacifier. She is one half of Some Silly Stories, a series of kooky, kinky hand-animated perversions based on her own crude drawings and a constant dialog with musician Flavien Berger. Bennani and artist Hayden Dunham are the co-founders of Other Travel, a collaborative curatorial project involving the creation and delivery of extra-terrestrial gifts to seven artists in the New York area.
Liz Magic Laser lives and works in Brooklyn. Her performances and videos intervene in semi-public spaces such as bank vestibules, movie theaters and newsrooms, and have involved collaborations with actors, dancers, surgeons, and motorcycle gang members.
