As a way to recognize and extend a supportive network for innovative practices and approaches to electronic music, Platforms will emphasize women who have deeply contributed to advancing our society and those who continue to do so through DJing, recording, installation and live performances.
UMFANG was born in the Bronx, grew up in Kansas and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Her first introduction to party music was the underground rave scene in Kansas City. She is a resident DJ at Bossa Nova Civic Club and runs the monthly party Technofeminism, which has been met with acclaim and much support. She’s played alongside Kim Ann Foxman, opened Zara Wladawsky & Aurora Halal’s festival Sustain Release in its inaugural year, played at NYC’s high-profile venues Verboten, Le Bain, and MoMA PS1, and is a founder of the NYC-based collective DISCWOMAN supporting female DJs. UMFANG is one of the leading women in the rapidly growing New York City techno scene and her 2015 debut releases came out on videogamemusic and 1080p.
BEARCAT is a London born, NY based multidisciplinary artist working within the realms of sounds, performance and make up. At the age of 19 in 2006 she began touring with various artist’s working as a backing singer and playing festivals such as Afro Punk, Glastonbury and Lovebox. By 2008 she was triggered into fulfilling her own goals by discovering her own vision of sound and started to work independently. During this transition she craved more and turned her attention to DJing. Inspired by her Jamaican roots and tribal echoes from her ancestor’s past BEARCAT is never afraid to go too deep and uses her emotive musical selections as her therapy, providing a bass heavy, tropical blend, bubbling mixture on the dance floor. BEARCAT has played all over including Berghain (Berlin), EAST BLOC (London) and Soho House (NY).
Abby...Who is she? She is a DJ hailing from Romeo, MI...Aka hometown of Kid Rock. She is part of New York crew Purple Tape Pedigree & world wide crew Sister. Her style is often described as: crazy.
Yulan Grant is a Jamaican born, New York based multi-disciplinary artist. SHYBØI is the moniker she uses to cause sonic disruption. As a member of the collective #KUNQ, SHYBØI uses sound to bun up nastiness and all bad mind.
Shelley Burgon is a harpist and sound artist based in New York. Her music centers around the sound of the harp, both as a traditional acoustic instrument in a chamber setting and as the primary sound source for her electronic music. Her sound art focuses on handmade electronic sound and light sculptures that combine scientific theories and mysticism.
